Our Success Stories

Jennie Harris

Age 50 - Senior Nurse Coordinator

"I have lost weight, gone down a dress size and fitted into clothing that has been sitting in the wardrobe for years"

"Back in 2012 I didn’t want to be a fat bridesmaid and was having a lot of stress in my personal life. I needed an escape and to use up some pent up energy. My friend advised me that the gym was a good way of helping with stress and also would help me lose weight.

I wanted to solve the problem because I was getting fatter and unhealthy as time went on. I was caring for my sick mum and was becoming increasingly tired due to being overweight. read more...

My friend asked me to be her bridesmaid and this kicked me into action when I saw myself in a dress. I didn’t want to look fat in her wedding pictures. It also kicked me into taking a look at my lifestyle, I was telling patients the risks of being overweight… but I was one of them. I thought to myself... How can I tell others about the dangers of obesity if I'm not following my own advice?

My biggest obstacle was my own mindset. I didn’t believe I could do it at first. I laughed when I first got told by Callum that he would help me lose weight and drop dress sizes. I thought at my age It wouldn’t happen. I was just happy to get a bit fitter

At first, it was hard to change what I ate and break all the bad habits I had become used to my whole life. Getting myself motivated to attend the gym at first was also hard, I always used that good old excuse that I don't have enough time. I can only manage to get there once a week and other silly excuses. Over time Callum helped me to break these limiting beliefs about myself and my situation

I dropped from a size 16 boarding 18 to a size 10 to 12. I feel a lot healthier and fitter than I ever have been in my life. My mental health is excellent, and if I feel stressed at work where I would usually turn to food or even alcohol, I now turn to the gym. I walk into the gym in a bad mood and walk out feeling so much better than I did.

I've developed a great relationship with my body and with exercise and now train at UF multiple times a week. I absolutely love it and I'm so happy that I took the plunge and made the decision all those years ago."

Klaudia Lepinska

Age 30 - Wellness Coach

"I feel so confident in my body, so much so that I shared my bikini pictures!"

"My problem before universal fitness was a lifetime of dieting and unhealthy relationships with food and my body, High cholesterol, Black and white thinking about exercise and food: “I’ve missed a day of training this week so I’ve failed”, “I’ve had a muffin for a snack so I’ve failed my diet, may as well eat crap for the rest of the week and start next Monday”. Excluding whole groups of foods from my diet - mainly carbs. Religiously seeing food as either good or bad. read more...

It was affecting my mental health to a point of developing an eating disorder and worsening other mental health conditions. Having high cholesterol also was a big wake up call, as well as generally feeling unfit and unhealthy.

Getting back into a routine of exercising and eating regularly after missing sessions due to illness, work or other commitments. Travel- I live on the other end of Stoke and don’t drive so I have to catch two buses to get back home from the sessions! After a few weeks or so I settled into this routine and now I’m fine.

My cholesterol has gone down to a healthy level. For the first time, I feel so confident in my body, so much so that I shared my bikini pictures! But most importantly I enjoy exercise, it gives me a great sense of achievement and I don’t see it as a punishment or a chore anymore. Eating disorder and other mental health issues are under control now."

Kevin Ray

Age 55 - Supervisor for Accountancy Firm

"I feel alive, happy and most of all, I feel like ME again"

"Before finding Universal Fitness I used to have a total lack of consistency with exercise. I would follow a plan for a couple of months, reach the end of the program and then that would be that, I'd leave it there and slip back to a more sedentary lifestyle for a few months or longer. Eventually, I would decide I'd put too much weight on again and needed to do some exercise, follow a course for a couple of months and yes, once completed I would leave it right there and go back to no physical activity. This is how my regime went on for years. read more...

I finally realised I was doing myself no favours in the way I was looking after my health and fitness. I was always yo-yoing and my stomach never really changed, and this was a key factor of why I did any exercise plans, to lose a few inches. I never made any gains or achieved any consistent results. Plus over the years I had bought quite a few clothes that I couldn't really fit into without looking out of shape, and had probably only worn once, or never, and I really wanted to lose inches around my gut once and for all so I could actually wear them and look half decent. This was a big driving force for me wanting to find something that might work for once and for all.

The main obstacle for me was, I really didn't like exercise! I think this was why I always opted for two month style workouts, because I could just about handle it, knowing when it was done, I was done and it was finished. I also thought time would be an issue, with work and family commitments, so I had always dodged gyms for the exercise at-home format.

I've never felt better! I never thought I would ever say this, but I love going to the gym! The Group PT format is something I knew nothing about before universal fitness. It's such a fantastic way to exercise and I absolutely love it. I actually find it fun and enjoy it immensely.

I found that I did have the time for it once I had committed it into my lifestyle, now it's just a normal part of my routine, without it affecting my work or family whatsoever. I feel I am now in the best shape I have been in for a number of years, and my wardrobe has now grown considerably without buying a single thing...virtually all the clothes I hadn't been able to wear now fit me without my stomach protruding! I have surpassed my normal 'two-month' dedication to exercise with this format, and only see the future with this continuing. I have also developed a pretty decent level of fitness without even expecting it, so a definite added bonus!"

Age 55 - Chartered Certified Accountant

"3 stone lost in three and a half months"

"Before joining I had been working from home during Covid, snacking way too much on the wrong foods and certainly not exercising enough

I had always been fit, active and done loads of sports but had really let myself go. I decided to get back into some sort of shape, especially now my son has gained independence and drives himself around instead of me doing it all.

Changing my routine was hard at first but once I settled in everything fell into place

The results have been amazing, 3 stone lost in three and a half months despite a few holidays! A total change of diet and mindset and I love going to training, I'm feeling so much fitter and stronger for it!

P.s. I hate missing sessions, so I always aim to attend and do extra at home. For example, long walks with our 4-year-old German Shepherd."

Laura French

Age 36 - Stoke City Council

"I have lost weight, gone down a dress size and fitted into clothing that has been sitting in the wardrobe for years"

"I was overweight, an emotional eater, hated all exercise apart from walking, felt unhealthy and was struggling with depression and anxiety.

When I first joined I was fixated on my weight and my only goal was to lose weight and feel better about myself. I have always had low self-esteem and body confidence issues and I knew I had to do something different to everything I had tried and failed at before. I wanted to lose weight and be a healthier role model for my children. read more...

The biggest obstacle for me was walking through the door for the first time. I felt embarrassed and ashamed of myself and I nearly didn’t attend that first session! I am so glad that I did though because I was met with happy, friendly and supportive members and the best coaching team I could ever ask for who are so invested in my journey, support me to achieve my goals and genuinely want me to succeed.

Mentally I have been through the worst season of my life this year, having had to take 6 months off work due to depression and anxiety issues. A huge obstacle for me was admitting to myself and others that I am struggling. I am naturally a very positive person, a people pleaser and don’t wish to burden others with my problems. I have come to accept the help that has been offered to me and learned that I have to put myself first sometimes. Attending the gym, learning about fitness and nutrition and being supported and listened to has been the most integral aspect of my recovery from depression. The sense of achievement, positivity and celebration of small wins coupled with the consistency of doing something just for me in a place I feel completely safe and secure to be myself is priceless.

Physically my results have been good, I have lost weight, gone down a dress size and fitted into clothing that has been sitting in the wardrobe for years as it was too small. This is great and helps me to keep motivated however the internal results have been the most life-changing for me. I have learned to change my mindset about nutrition and exercise and the positive effects that this has had on my mental health. I never thought I would say this but I now LOVE the time I spend in the gym and if I miss a few days I crave it. I now have this desire to be the best version of myself rather than constantly putting myself down and concentrating on everything that I felt I was useless at. I now feel stronger physically and mentally and I feel proud of myself for working hard to achieve these results because it hasn’t been easy, but it has been totally worth it!"
